The Unchallenged King of Work Boot Leathers

Walk onto any construction site, shipyard, metal foundry, or oil refinery anywhere on earth, and you will notice a consistent pattern: the vast majority of heavy-duty safety boots feature a distinctive, textured, pebble-grain leather known across the world as Barton Print Leather.

Far from being merely a cosmetic texture, the Barton grain profile is a calculated engineering solution. For 25 years, New Era Tanning Centre in Kanpur has mastered the complex chemistry, mechanical plating, and finishing required to produce premium DIN-certified Barton leathers for the world's most demanding safety brands.

What is Barton Print Leather and How is It Made?

Barton print leather begins with heavy, high-substance bovine hides (buffalo or cow) selected for dense collagen fiber architecture. The manufacturing process at our Kanpur tannery involves several rigorous stages:

  1. Beamhouse & Liming: Raw hides are de-haired and opened up in tanning drums to allow full chemical penetration.
  2. Chrome Tanning (Wet Blue): Hides undergo chrome tanning to achieve hydrothermal stability (shrinkage temperature > 100°C).
  3. Retanning & Fatliquoring: Specialized synthetic tannins and lubricating oils are introduced to impart optimal suppleness and tensile elongation without creating loose grain.
  4. Hydraulic Plating (Rotopia & Press): The leather is passed through massive heated hydraulic embossing plates (shown in our tannery machinery) under pressures exceeding 300 bars at 85°C–100°C. This stamps the signature microscopic pebble-grain relief pattern permanently into the dermal grain layer.
  5. Pigmentation & Water-Repellent Topcoat: High-performance polyurethane and acrylic emulsions with cross-linking agents are applied via automated spray carousels to achieve hydrophobic, fuel-oil resistant finishes.

Why Industry Specifies Barton Print Over Smooth Leathers

Performance Property Barton Print Leather Smooth Full Grain Leather
Scratch & Scuff Concealment Outstanding (Pebbles mask scuffs and gouges) Poor (Scuffs are immediately visible)
Tear & Tensile Strength ≥ 120 N (Exceeds DIN EN ISO 20344) ≥ 100 N
Flex Resistance (Bally Flexometer) > 50,000 dry cycles with no cracking > 40,000 cycles
Cutting Yield Efficiency High (80%–88% cutting yield) Lower (65%–75% due to natural growth marks)
Water Repellency (WRU) Consistent absorption ≤ 20% over 60 mins Varies depending on surface porosity

Compliance with European DIN Norms

At New Era Tanning Centre, all Barton print leather batches are formulated strictly to satisfy DIN standard requirements (DIN EN ISO 20344 / 20345):

The Tannery Advantage: Because New Era Group controls our own tannery, we don't rely on third-party tanners who may cut corners with inferior fillers or uneven embossing. We guarantee batch-to-batch color fidelity and physical test compliance on every shipment.

Barton Print vs. Dakota vs. Zuggrain

While Barton is the global standard, New Era Tanning Centre also produces alternative textured varieties:
